How do you become a judge? What is the difference between an attorney and a lawyer?

I want to know what it takes to become a judge and if you would have to start out as a defense attorney or something. And when you are a defense attorney do you HAVE to defend certain people when you are just starting out? Like i wouldnt want to defend a s*****g that I know is guilty. Please let me know and personal experiences would be great.

judges are appointed to their bench, and you have had to been or are a lawyer.. the rest comes down to where you work, you work for a law office that defends s*****g then you have to do it or get fired.
