For people who have been to war, did it give a life long sense of purpose and honor?

I want to join because I want to serve my country but part of me feels like I am being really naive. What do think?

The training gives you those feelings. The actually battles, firefights, etc. just depends what's going on, the mission, your unit, and other things. I guess to some it might. The infantry guys usually just develop drug habits and warped political views, along with paranoia.

For me the war added to those feelings, but my sense of purpose and honor were found in serving my country. Being in a military family, I can tell you that you will go to infantry, not like nor dis-like it, and come out F'd up. Just wanting to serve your country isnt enough, you want to live for the fight and be willing to die for the person next to you if it is required.
