Why would a doctor choose to become a General Practitioner?

My family doctor is bright, extremely sharp, energetic and dresses in a tailored suit .... and yet he's running a small town clinic with his wife. Why isn't he a Consultant in Emergency Medicine or Cardiology? Isn't that a more exciting and less predictable job?

Some doctors like to have a more long term relationship with their patients and their families - deliver babies, gynae care of the mother, childhood illnesses, fathers mishaps and broken bones etc. Not everyone is mercenary.

GP's do get to see a variety of cases. It's possible that he didn't do very well on his boards, and his only residency option was GP. Also, there's a huge need for primary care physicians, so perhaps he was cut a great deal (such as loan repayment) to do GP.

Quite the contrary. A cardiologist sees only heart cases (or "rule out" same). A primary care physician may see anything in his next consultation.

Being a GP with your own practise earns way more than working in a hospital for a lot less work. It could also be because this was easier than training in a harder speciality as GP training takes a lot less time than other specialities.
