Is it necessary to take an internship to become an archaeologist?

To graduate and become an archaeologist, is it necessary to do an internship and if so, how long would it be for?

Archaeologists do something called "field school" which isn't really an internship like we think of one but is a field experience actually doing some real archaeology so it's very similar. You would need to earn a Master's degree and then a PhD in archaeology.

An internship isn't necessary but it is a plus. As one of the other contributors noted, field schools are required for most archaeology jobs. The field school I took was offered by my university in the summer and ran for 6 weeks... More
