What would my son have to do to pursue a career in Game Design?

My son is a freshman in high school and wants to be a game designer when he's older. His high school doesn't offer very many technology courses and the few that they do have are about sharpening your typing skills. What I want to know is if there is anything he can do like online or something that will help him in his chosen career path? I do believe he wants to be a Game Developer in specific terms. Please help he really wants to learn about this and was very disappointed that his school didn't offer Design courses.

There are sometimes some colleges that offer free courses for Highschool students. Ive done this in my highschool years, and its very helpful. You should call around, and there can possibly be a graphic design or game design course at a college near you.
