What is up with this diastasis?

I know I have diastasis recti. But when I do the check, just lifting my head a tiny bit, it seems small--only one or two fingers (slim fingers). There is almost no mound when I do the check, even when I only lift my head a tiny bit, like one inch off the ground (not even lifting my neck). Yet, when I flex my muscles standing up, there is a wide shallow area (four or five fingers) over my belly button. I hate it. I am wearing the splint and doing the exercises but I think my muscles are malformed or something because it is very hard for me to do the standing Tuplers. Oh, and another thing is that I have a 24 inch waist, so wouldn't that indicate that there is something holding in the stomach? I am 35 inches around the hips so it's not like that is a big waist. It just seems not to jive with the literature that indicates that a diastasis will lead to the stomach hanging out. Or are other muscles compensating? How can I engage the right muscles? Thanks!
