Camera operator for movies, tips of the trade?
So, I'm taking classes for film tech. On our next class shoot and hopefully in the future I'd like to be a camera operator. So my question is what are the basics I need to know, gear I should have, skills, any tips or tricks. I know a bit about photography, cinematography and basic camera operation but not extensively.

The main thing is just be clear with the DP on what he wants from the shot. The more clear you are the better. As far as camera operator goes, you don't need any specific gear unless you are also an AC in which case it would be good to have a tape measure, colored paper tape, a lens cloth and an air spray can, and then... This is far too complicated a question to answer in a single sitting much less here. Your classes should answer these questions for you over tyme. I imagine the class allows for different students to work in different roles throughout the duration of the course, so simply ask your instructor if you can be the DP and... More
