Should we have a NATIONAL SERVICE scheme in Britain?

Do you think a Nation Service Scheme would be a good idea for the UK [REPOSTED explanation at bottom] My personal opinion is that its Essential and Long Overdue, I don't mean a system like the American Boot Camps, though the idea is appealing considering recent events. But something more like the old National Service system where they are treated and trained like regular troops which is proven to instil Self Discipline, Self Respect, Self Confidence, Pride, Maturity and they earn Employable Skills, and they earn an admirable certificate of Achievement. They would be doing community work or any work where the GOV needs them at home or abroad. Serving the country for one year. (not serving in War zones) Compare that to what they would achieve in one year sitting around smoking weed all day, would they be thankful for it in the end? d**n right they would. and so would the rest of us. Now how and when someone would qualify to do National Service (enforced with a Court Warrant) I don't exactly know, but something like.. if they've been on the Doll (welfare) for a year and haven't met a certain criteria of job applications etc, then they get a preliminary notice warning them that they could possibly be selected for Service, it would be like 2 Verbal Warnings and a Written Warning, Then they get served a Court Warrant to be handed over to the Military. It would work for troublesome youths who are constantly in and out of Police Custody, it would break that cycle. Now obviously its a very complicated issue that not only would cost a fortune to roll out and upkeep (though we would start seeing the returns in following years as the attitude to work and community pride would change) ..but there are the issues with Drug Addicts and People with mental health issues, who wouldn't respond too well to such an environment. Well, that's my thoughts of the top of my head. Added: Clarifying My Opinion Above: 1. They would Not be trained nor housed along side real Army recruits, It would be Newly created department within New purpose built facilities in New locations. I wouldn't expect they would be Firing Weapons, But the regimental and physical training would be the same. 2. You must realise, that 90% of the youths involved in the recent disorder, Do Not even want a job, they sit around smoking weed all day Moaning that they can't get a job and how Normal people don't understand them or the Struggle they have to deal with, and if they finally pick their backsides up and apply for an interview, they Can't get up in the morning, let alone even sticking a job out for one day as they jack it in because they can't handle the change. 90% of them. (I grew up across London in the underground scene, and I know it like the back of my hand, I wasn't exactly an angel myself) They don't care about the shooting of Mark Duggan and they certainly don't care about a Job. They come from a subculture world that's driven by drugs, intimidation and day dreams. with a disdain for Normal Everyday Hard working People and Society in general. Their lack of self worth is a constant vicious spiral of self infliction, hemmed in by their subcultural world. and that's why they need to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck, yanked out of it and forced into a character building process. There's no amount of "hey there's more jobs at the job centre now" or "we've got more street lights and communal areas" or "we've created more transport networks" is going to solve it. This video URL below demonstrates the typical misconception and ignorance of people who don't have a clue what's really going on within young society, as the guy in the video justifies the actions of the trouble makers AS IF they have a legitimate cause and reasoning behind their actions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDNDrTWrZV0 [ I had to Repost this question because, as it turns out, we can't edit posted questions, I then went over the character limit when Adding Information which destroyed the post, My apologies to people who Answered before ] A very well made and interesting video that I urge you to watch called ( True News: The Real Source of the British Riots ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiw3wg1mgro

I agree entirely. People such as those you described are ruining own country (UK Riots) for their own selfish reasons. They say they get no respect from 'the rich' and the police, yet they confront that 'lack of respect' by smashing up their own towns and assaulting random people. Also, their opinion of who is 'rich... More

How about we go for a far more simple solution. Build British industry back up, ban half of all imports and get the British BUYING BRITISH and funding their own employment. Wouldn't that be a more sensible option? that way we would be making money through taxes instead of spending money. We need jobs and to see some... More

A lot of people would try very hard to get out of a year or two of National Service/Community Service. They have it in Germany and all of the German maths students I met did not seem happy with it.
