Earn extra income in your spare time with a part-time evening job
A full-time day job doesn't always provide enough money to make ends meet. Many people turn to a second job to make income to pay off debt, boost savings or buy luxuries they can't otherwise afford.
Deciding what type of part-time evening job to pursue can be difficult. However, many businesses hire customer service representatives on a regular basis. Their reasoning is simple: they rely on customers to make money, so it's important that they provide good service to keep those customers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that jobs in the customer service sector will grow 18 percent in the future, giving you plenty of options for part-time work.
Customer Service Representatives
Every retail store--ranging from mass retailers to high-end boutiques--rely on their customer service representatives to be their direct link to the customer. A retail customer service representative's job duties include everything from ringing up customer purchases to stocking inventory to addressing customer complaints. Many retail stores are open seven days a week and they need staff to cover several shifts during the day. If you're good with customers, it's likely a retail business will allow you to work nights only if you have another full-time job.
A growing number of customer service jobs are located in call centers. Telephone customer service representatives work with companies to assist their customers with everything from placing orders to billing issues. To work in a call center, you must have good communication skills and a knack for problem solving.
As of May 2008, the median hourly salary of customer service representatives is $14.36, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Your pay will depend on many factors, including your experience, where you live and the type of business.
Telephone Technical Support
If you enjoy working with computers and solving problems, then a part-time evening job in telephone technical support might be a good choice. Technical support representatives are somewhat similar to customer service representatives, but technical support reps are required to have in-depth knowledge about the products their company sells in order to give customers advice on how to fix their gadgets.
Many companies train their technical support reps, so you don't necessarily need a degree in Information Technology to get a job. However, more advanced technical support jobs do require advanced degrees because of the complexity of their company's products.
Hourly salaries for technical support representatives can range anywhere from $12 to $30 an hour, or more. The actual hourly rate for part-time technical support reps will largely depend on many factors, including education and experience level, the company and where the job is located.
Restaurants build their reputation, in part, on the level of service provided to customers. Good service brings customers back, so restaurants are consistently in need of high quality servers. Servers are tasked with taking care of the customer's needs while they are at the restaurant. This service includes taking orders, providing food recommendations and refilling beverages, as needed. The actual tasks will depend on the style of the restaurant.
Restaurant serving is a great part-time evening job choice because restaurants are primarily open during the evening hours. Most restaurant servers work for tips and are able to bring home the money they earn right away, saving the weeks-long wait for a paycheck.
Restaurant serving jobs can be fast-paced and stressful, especially in popular establishments. However, if you're physically fit and good at multi-tasking, then you can bring home a good amount of extra income consistently. Restaurant servers make a median hourly salary of $8.01, according to the BLS. However, servers are known to make much more than that, depending on the restaurant.
