What are some good tasks and job to give herding dogs (like Rough or Smooth Collies) when you live in the city?

Herding dogs are meant to, well, herd. I'm contemplating getting a smooth / rough collie and I live in Chicago - and I want to know what are some interesting jobs or tasks that you can give a city-dwelling collie? Any thoughts? Collies are smart, but get bored with repetitive tricks, and I want to tap into a collie's full potential - but I need creative ideas on how to tap into that in the city. Any thoughts?

Take it to agility. That will be enough for a collie, as long as you give it mental stimulation throughout the day as well :)

A lot of cities have "urban herding" centers where you go tot a facility that is kind of like a horse arena. You take classes and teach your dog to herd sheep. Once you pass the course you can "rent" the sheep by hour and just go whenever you want.

But there are training classes that you can get involved with, meeting other dog people that are involved in different dog sports and go from there. You will not be far from upstate NY; see if you can find a sheep herding clinic and get her started learning how to... More

There's so many things to channel your dogs energy into, even when you live in the city. Find an agility or obedience club. Many of these clubs are also holding classes in Trieball or K9Nosework. There's plenty to do, no matter what kind of dog you have... More
