When should I apply for a job with the federal government?

I am in my final year of law school and graduate in May 2012. I want to work for the federal government not necessarily as a lawyer but as a contract specialist or something like that. I have heard that in most cases the hiring process is a very long one. When should I start applying for such jobs on USAjobs.com? Thanks in advance for your help!

Go talk to your Career Services office TOMORROW. You've already missed the deadline for many (not all) of the attorney hiring programs and the PMF. The process is a little different if you don't actually want to be an attorney, but you're already way behind for most of the non-attorney positions as well... More
