Will you lose a possible job opportunity if you couldn't provide a reference in your application?

I just got this job and they've received every documents they needed. I'm gonna start orientation next week but the HR lady is still asking me to tell my references to return her calls. I havent gotten any of them on the phone yet. Will this affect my employment?

Personal references are used for a variety of reasons. When you apply for a job, employers ask for personal references, and many credit card companies want you to provide references when you apply for credit. You most likely will, they need to know what other people say about you. But if your stuck for a reference go to a present teacher or old teacher that you got on with and they should reference you :)
