Is the recruiter telling the truth?

I went to see a navy recruiter today and I said that I really want to be a navy corpsman. He told me that it's not what I want it's what the navy needs. I thought that I would get to choose my specailty. Was he just trying to sell me into filling spots or was he telling me the truth because I really want to save lives and corpsman is really something I want to do how cab I make this happen?
