Does this make sense to you and how to improve it?

" There were times when my family relied on me to surmount language barrier since I was a big sister. I did various things from ordering food at El Pollo Loco to speaking with a T-Mobile guy. Often, I felt it was unfair, as my brother and sister would never have to do these jobs. I solaced myself that these were responsibilities and duties that an oldest child should confront rather than allow myself to look on them as a burden."

Makes sense, flows well "surmount [the] language barrier" would make the grammar perfect there.

I agree with T-Rex. It flows very well and makes sense. Insert [the] as he suggests. You should also use [consoled] in place of [solaced] .
