If I want to be a public defender, how important is it for me to go to a top 20 law school?

I am not sure how logical or beneficial it will be for me to apply to top 20 schools like Georgetown and Northwestern. These schools have great reputations but only a small number of students entering the public interest field.

I'd say it's much more important to go to the top law school in the city/state/region where you want to work. You will absolutely need experience in the PDs office to get a postgrad job there. You should go to the best law school you possibly can. Getting a job after law school is highly competitive even for public interest positions. It does matter where you go to law school.

It is not important and might be contraindiated. Public defenders get great trial experience but get paid like crap and if you get out of school with $120,000 in debt from law school, that $30K salary they are paying is not something you can afford to take and get that fantastic experience.
