this is a question you really need to prepare for. Find out what other people in the position you are applying for get paid and ask for the same.

I would try to research that company or jobs wages for a position like that one to get how much they make and stay within that range so you will know before you go to fill out an app or before they ask.

When they ask what you are seeking in salary, turn it on them and ask "What is the salary range for this position?". When they hem and haw and squirm and finally tell you the range, ask for the top of the range. That way you are sure to be within limits of the Company and you know you asked for as much as they can... More

I always say, "it depends on the responsibilities of the position". Do they want the status quo, or will they expect more of me? Can I create a niche for myself in their framework that justifies the salary I have in mind? Moral: I just try to keep it an open question until the negotiations become serious.
