What could happen if I don't show up for court after being summoned?

I am being summoned by a credit card debt collector, and I know if I don't show up they can garnish wages, put a lien on any property I owe. But I don't have a job, and I don't own any property (not even vehicle) only my spouse does (could this effect him)? So If I don't have anything for the debt collectors to take, can they put me in jail? The court date is also only a few weeks before my baby is due.

They can't do anything to you besides having bad credit.... It will only affect your husband if you have something joint with him. (same title on something) other than that they could suck it. You probably will be fined for not showing up and take away any property of yours. Your husband has a different social security... More

If you don't show up for a court date, then you *could* get arrested, yes. It may not be likely, but it is possible.

Your spouse can be effected if you legally married. And if you do not go to the court hearing, they will send a warrent out for your arrest. You should go, it'll just get much worse if you don't.

They will win judgement by default. If you have a joint checking or savings they will tap into that. No jail. It will just destroy your credit. You can take your baby with you to court and request that they take a smaller amount from your checking account.

If you go to court you could try a plead to the judge the facts in your question. Maybe nothing will happen but you never know. If you don't show up your creditors will win a judgment and it will follow you (almost) forever. You have nothing (more) to lose.

If you are summoned then you have to show up or you will be arrested if you don't. Most likely will ruin your credit, and if you have any thing jointly will ruin his credit as well. I'm not sure you will be doing any jail time over being delinquent in credit card payments, they will most likely try to come up with... More
