I don't understand United States military rank?

Is there anybody who can "dumb it down" for me? Whenever I try to find out the different aspects online, it usually overwhelms me with all the confusing aspects and details. And I meant like what each one does and their responsibilities. Infantry

The rank doesn't tell you what each rank does or its responsibilities. Your MOS tells what type job you have. When you reach a higher rank, the MOS often changes to show that you are now a supervisor or manager... More

The other individual who responded was partially correct, however it varies depending on the branch. For instance, an O-6 in most branches is a Colonel, but in the Navy it is a Captain, which is an O-3 in the other branches. This site provides Enlisted ranks (or Rates in the Navy's case): More

Infantry is not a branch. He means Army? Navy? Air Force? Marines? They all have different structures in how the ranking system is laid out.

There are actually two rank systems, the named rank and pay rating. Each branch has different named ranks, but the same pay ratings. The pay ratings are E-1 to E-9 for enlisted ranks, E-1 being lowest. There is W-1 to W-5 for Warrant Officers, Warrant Officers outrank enlisted ranks. Then O-1 to O-10 the Commissioned... More
