Does it seem to you that we as America are an empire rather than a republic?

We have military bases world wide. We command nato. Why do we continue to exert this kind of influence. Why can't we just stray away from our imperialistic ways?

You hate America. The Founding Fathers intended for us to be a global empire in a perpetual state of war with countries much weaker than ourselves. If you don't like it, you can leave.

No really not, an empire imposes its will on a conquered territory, any bases we have overseas are there with the permission of the local government and can be removed at their request.

Rome was both republican and imperialist, so the two are not mutually exclusive. NATO is commanded by its members on a rotating basis. We have military bases world wide to protect the rest of the world, and we have to have permission to put them there. And we have to pay to build and run those bases, plus we hire local labor.
