What should I set my iron to when fusing plastic bags?
I've read that you're supposed to set the iron between rayon and polyester, but my iron has neither of those settings. It only has (from coolest to hottest) synthetics, silk, wool, cotton, and linen. The silk setting flattened the bags out nicely, but didn't actually fuse them, and the wool setting caused the bags to fuse...but they shrank, forming an ugly, wrinkled, malformed, and very stiff material, kinda like card stock. Do I just have the wrong iron for the job? It's a pretty old iron.

The iron should use a "hot" setting, but not the hottest setting. The resulting heat may also be affected by the type of paper you use on both sides of the plastic pieces to be joined, and how long you leave the iron in any one place, using any setting... More

Start cool and gradually increase the heat till you get the effect you want. You may find that the setting which flattened the bags will fuse them if you hold the iron down for an extra second or 2. Again do a little bit at a time.
