How do you react when someone complains that they have to work on Christmas Day?

On Christmas Day, a majority of the workforce has the day off on this day. This includes retail workers, fast food restaurants, small businesses, mail services and shopping malls. However, there are some workers that do have to work on this day. This includes hospital workers, law enforcement workers who work in public safety, restaurant workers, hospitality workers and movie theater workers. How do you react if you see someone complains about having to work on Christmas Day? When someone I know complains about working on Christmas Day, I would like to tell them that they should be thankful to be employed right now because right now, there are many Americans who are unemployed and cannot find a new job and they would be thankful to be employed right now even if they had to work on Christmas Day.

I agree with your assessment. There are far too many people out of work to ever complain because you have a job that requires you to work on Christmas.

I would say "If you're that worried about it, why did you take the job?" If they predictably said "It was the only one I could get" or "I had to, I needed the money", I would reply "Well thats good then - at least you're not unemployed. Stop moaning. Have a day off another time instead"

Yes, some people are spending this Christmas unemployed. And some of the people who are complaining may have family members they don't get to see at any other time of year, or who they may only have a limited number of Christmases left to enjoy. If only the most dire hardship entitled you to complain about something... More

I'm sure those people realize that they are lucky to have work, however the friends and family are all eating, drinking and being merry while you are at work. So, it really isn't all that much fun to be the one who is working... More

Yeah, I'd probably just say something like "well, at least you have a job"

I sympathise. The economy sucks, lucky to have a job - true. That doesn't mean the person has no right to feel badly at missing time with family at holidays, one of the few solaces in this climate.
