what is the best way to self teach video game programing?

For college I am going to Vancouver Film School to study and practice video game designing. I know the difference between designing and programming, but nevertheless i would like to get a head start with learning what its all about. Does anybody know programs that i can teach myself (possibly with a tutor) to learn programming?

I would actually start with Alice 2.2. It is a relatively easy programming language. From there, move onto Jeroo and then finally to BluJay, which is actual programming (although still simplified). With Alice, use youtube guides and the Alice forums! I made my own game with Alice btw.

Alice is a good choice, like the first suggestion. You need to mental-process like a list of code. I learned Java / C++ for Virtual Worlds. Alice is a Java workstation.
