Why do parents encourage their children to have make lots of friends and do well at school?

Because if you believe what is printed in the media, popular children who do well at school and who have lots of friends are always the ones to killed in playground fights, or get kidnapped. Surely if the likes of the BBC are to be believed, we should be encouraging our children to be loaners and not do well at school? Maybe a community support officer should be stationed in each school just to watch over the popular children?
