Can i get a refund on a non refundable car payment with out any signatures?

I decided to go around and look for a car, when i found the one that i saw was the right one for me i talked to the dealer and i agreed on punting down a 300$ down payment which by no means he didnt say that it was non refundable and i also didnt sign any paper work and it dosent say anything on the recipe about non refundable. When i went by i told them that i had changed my mind and that i would like my money back, they start talking to me about it not be refundable, and kept sending me from one person to another when finally i got to the "big man" and he said that it was all up to some company that owes the car dealership. Idk what to do, im a full time college student which just works a part time job. PLEASE HELP!!!
