Interesting jobs in forensics and criminology and their descriptions?

I am interested in forensics, but I do not know exactly what I want to do. I like watching shows like Criminal Minds and would love to have a job like the characters, but I think their jobs are many 'real life' jobs combined into one. I wouldn't mind working in a lab, but would also enjoy working on scene. I would enjoy being a crime scene investigator, but do you have to be a cop before you can do that? Thanks everyone :)
