What would be my first step in becoming a Police Officer?

I live in Fort Lauderdale and would like to be in law enforcement here. I am very good physical ship, good morals, and I abstain from unhealthy habits. I heard though, that you can't just go to the police academy to be an officer. Please, no rude unnecessary comments. This is a serious question! Thanks in advance for any help.
