An opponent for a job I want has submitted over 20 reference letters?
This is a high level administration job. Applicants were asked to list five references. The rumor is he is going to submit 200! I am planning to stick to my five, as this is what was requested. I even hesitated in a sixth reference I really wanted to use so as to not break protocol. Do you think this will hurt or help him? I am curious to find what people think about this action. Some have told me to do the same but my gut is that it is a mistake.

Stick to your plan !!!! Any employer will only ring a few. I work in the mining industry and only ever use 1 or 2 references, seriously ! 200 references would make the other candidate look like either a tool or someone who hasn't been able to hold down a job for to long. Best of luck

I would stick with what was instructed. This other guy seems to be a butt kisser, and if your employer wants that kind of person in the position, you never had a chance in the first place.
