For those still working on their degrees, ASA also has a list of summer internships, mostly located in the Midwest and East.
Position Titles: Sometimes the word statistician appears in the job title, often not. A few recent titles of statistical jobs have been: biostatistician, statistical programmer, quality management engineer, financial analyst, environmental risk analyst, senior data associate, data analyst, strategic planning analyst, data mining specialist, SAS programmer, actuary.
Geography: To find the right job are you willing to go anywhere in the world? The US? California? Or do you need to stay in the Bay Area? Obviously the more territory you include, the better your chances of a perfect fit. Even so, the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most active and diverse job markets for statisticians.
The demand for statisticians is currently high and growing. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of nonacademic jobs for statisticians is expected to increase through 2016. Furthermore, colleges and universities will be hiring more faculty members in statistics fields. Salaries and opportunities for advancement are competitive and reflect the current demand.
Which Industries Employ Statisticians?
Statistics provides the reasoning and methods for producing and understanding data. Statisticians are specialists, but statistics demands they be generalists, too. One advantage of working in statistics is that you can combine your interest with almost any other field in science, technology, or business.
