What is a good way to help poor/unfortunate people without giving them money?

Please list some ideas. Also, if you can, list websites and books that give some ideas. I should mention that I don't believe giving people money is the answer. First of all, most people will just blow it away so they are no different than before. If I gave them food, the same argument could be made. It keeps them right where they are because if you hand things to them, they have no incentive to work. There must be something a person can do that will help them out w/o keeping them where they are.

If that's how you feel then give them a stack of job applications and a book about how to find employment.
