Actually a fair number of high quality air rifles CAN stand up to something like a 22 short which has an operating pressure of 21,000 psi or 24,000 psi for a 22 long rifle cartridge... More

A .22 lr cartridge develops 24,000 PSI. It will impart in excess of 120 ft lbs of energy to a 40 gr bullet and kick it along at 1200+ fps. Your .22 pellet rifle won't get 1/10 of that energy.

do can, some can't depends on airgun. I know my chinese made B3-1 can, it's the same steel as rifle barrels. it even has a 5.45 bore. typically airgun pressures are below 2000 psi. typically .22LR works at 19,000 psi.
