In California, do you need a PE license or any other license to practice an Engineering job?

I am a M.S. Applied Math major. I plan on taking some Mechanical Engineering courses. I want to know this. In California, do you need a PE license or any other license to practice an Engineering job? Can I have an engineering profession without any license? I like to do problem solving/research work (in the field/at a company), but I may plan to do technical or design work. Thank you.

You do not need a PE license to do engineering work for a company as long as that company has a PE on its staff to approve and supervise your work. After working as an engineer for 4 years you can then take the exam to get your own PE license.

It depends what you want to do. Most engineering jobs in manufacturing don't require a license. Construction-related jobs do.
