What are the little details that shaped America into the society it is today?

I'm doing a History Oratorical on what shaped America into what it is today and I need ideas. Ex: Like if Abraham Lincoln didn't do this, then we would still have slavery etc. Thanks :)

Your term "little details" doesn't fit your example of Emancipation.
