Should I check on job application status?

I applied last week for a library technical assistant job for the state government that has a closing date of February 27, 11:59pm. Do you think it would be wise to call & check the status of my application? It's an entry level job but I don't want to appear like a pest. I really need this job.

It's too soon. The announcement doesn't close until tonight midnight, and there could be a hundred applications or more that the HR person has to go through. If you call tomorrow, you may be able to confirm that they received the application, but they won't be able to tell you anything more. Give it a week and then... More

Wait a week after the deadline to submit passes and then call. Show interest in the position and ask to interview. Good luck.
