If a personal vehicle is being used for a merchandising job, can a company tax you on your commuting miles?

My vehicle is used to deliver merchandise from one location to another throughout the week. Recently, the company is asking that we record our commuting miles -- Enter the miles from home to the first stop and then enter the miles from the last stop to home. These miles are to be taxed?

It has to do with the IRS rules and what they consider a business expense. If you're using your own car to deliver you can write off the gas you use as a business expense which is a tax deduction. They are reporting that to the IRS, because they can only count your business miles as a deductible expense. If you use the vehicle for personal miles, that could be seen as a form of income. (at about $.50 per mile.) Your company has little choice about this, it's the IRS rule... More

I was a merchandiser at Pepsi and used my personal vehicle. I was paid for my mileage. My mileage was never taxed. Don't know that it's the law or anything but that's how Pepsi @ Salinas, CA does it. Hope this helps u.
