Do ultrasound techs/diagnostic medical sonographers have to be on call?
I am looking into becoming an ultrasound tech. I read an article that said they have a beeper and need to be on call ready to go to work on nights, holidays, and weekends. I have not read this anywhere else, and it seems strange because I was under the impression that they worked regular hours. Is this true?

Yes, we absolutely do. Sonographers who work in hospitals work on call. Unless the hospital has someone working 3rd shift and weekends, and even then they would have people on "back-up call" in case it's too busy for one person. There are certain ultrasounds that are considered STAT and cannot wait until someone comes... More

Depends on where you work-a large hospital may staff 24/7. The smaller hospital I worked at had one on call and yes, we called her in all the time. There are almost no medical field jobs that can guarantee a 9-5, M-F work schedule. But an individual job has whatever hours they have.
