How can I tell whether a high deductible health plan is right for me and my family?

I got a new job and I am now deciding on our health insurance. Who are the HDHP designed for? I am married with one child. I plan to have another child in the next year or two. I will carry only the children and not my husband since is it cheaper for me to carry them than it is for him. We have no chronic illness in our family.
