Why do people think Austin walking off the job in 2002 was a bad thing?

When in fact, Austin said he didn't mind jobbing to Lesnar but didn't want to because it would have been a low-profile match instead of huge buildup not to mention the direction the company doing along with Austin's injuries so he leave the company in June of 2002. Why do people say he walked off the job was a bad thing? IF so what Austin should have done instead of walking off the job? Was it right to walk off the job like that without giving the WWE notice?
