Why do people claim that the right-wing protects freedom?
The right likes to claim that it opposes high taxes and spending and large government, and supports states' rights, liberty and individualism. However, they do a lot which contradicts that. They supported the Patriot Act, created the Department of Homeland Security, spend massive amounts of public funds (and lives) on wars, useless defense projects and other corporate subsidies, restrict immigration (and businesses who hire immigrants), international travel, and recreational drug use (except alchohol and tobacco for some reason), and support religion in schools and strict religious definitions of marriage. I've also heard some of them that oppose women's rights and multiculturalism. Where is the "freedom" and "small government" in all of this? I realize that the leftist politicians are, for the most part, complicit with the rightist ones in these matters, and I recognize the Democrats authoritarian nature. I am a moderate, not rightist or leftist, and I don't necessarily disagree with some Republican policies (my point isn't whether the policies are right or wrong). I simply don't see how the Republicans are any less authoritarian. So why do people say so? Why do people who support individualism and small government vote for this party? Before anyone says that a true "conservative" supports liberty, that's not technically correct. A liberal supports liberty, and a conservative supports conservation of power. The political definitions are skewed and ill-defined.

Very well said! I do have to correct you on one thing however, not all Conservatives are like that, I know many sane rational ones that are pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, and do not want religion in politics, or in the schools. The GOP today is a shadow of it's former self... More

Most have no idea what freedom is. Many think it is the right to bully or abuse others. Or kill Trayvon. Or smoke in restaurants. Or force others to pay for their trips to the ER. Or be socially irresponsible.

Because they don't. That means one of two things. They're either lying. Or perpetrating a very large fraud. Which in my opinion. Is Lying politically.

Yeah - they want to protect a woman's freedom to use contraception. They want to protect my freedom to feel unthreatened by the George Zimmermans of the world who somehow were judged to be capable of carrying a loaded gun. And, they want to protect my freedom of religion - unless of course it's anything but a bible-... More

Only because the libertarians are usually more accepted on the so called "right". It is only they who really give a d**n about freedom. The rest just want to pay it lip service.

It does protect freedom. But what good is freedom if you don't have a job or a home? You are free to sit on a park bench and freeze to death without being disturbed. I'd rather have less freedom but have a home, warmth and food

Neither liberal or conservative is interested in unfettered liberty. Liberals want equal liberty on people with as little government reach as possible in our homes, but substantial control over business and corporate interests. Conservatives want the opposite - unequal personal liberty only for themselves and little... More

I fail to see how anyone who does not support or believe in the principles contained in the Bill of Rights is in favor of a free country. Conservative Libertarians and other true conservatives do believe in the Constitution and the rights and privileges it provides. Let me add that Neocons and teabaggers ruined the country.

To be Right-wing means to be governed by a higher power greater than ourselves. I wrote about this in my book, "Only Conservatives are in their Right Minds." Left-wingers dictate their principles, which they then force upon others. Go to: http://www2.xlibris.com/books/webimages/wd/109207/
