I am a very quiet person, how can I stop being this way?

My whole life I always have been the shy quiet kid. In school I would only talk to my good friends other than that I almost never talked to anyone else. I can never approach someone I don't know and start up a conversation, no matter how hard I try I can never do that. I started college this year and I have made some friends but they talked to me first. Once someone talks to me first I feel more comfortable around them and start talking to them. If no one talks to me I just sit their by myself and not talk to anyone. I don't know to stop acting this way. I am however getting better the older I get, when I was young my cousin thought I was a mute but now when there is a group of people and I feel comfortable with at least one or two of them I join in the conversations. I did play the drums in high school.. I did play the drums in high school..

I think you just need to get to know people better and then you might feel more comfortable around them .
