Writers of Yahoo: Who of you enjoys world-building?

Well if you clicked, I have presents for you :D I am currently rebuilding one of my worlds because let's face it, I didn't do a good enough job the first time. So, I'm working on this awesome 30 page questionnaire that I would never post here. Some of the questions are really cool though. So, tell me all about your world!

1) Where are major mountain ranges? Rivers and lakes? Deserts? Forests, tropical and otherwise? Grasslands and plains?

2) If there are imaginary animals (dragons, unicorns, etc.), how do they fit into the ecology? What do they eat? How much habitat do they require? Can they live anywhere, or do they prefer or need specific kinds of climate or terrain? Are they intelligent and/or capable of working spells, talking, etc.?

3) Which natural resources, if any, have been depleted in which areas over time?

4) How far back are there records or tales of historical events? How widely known are these stories?

5) Where did civilization begin? What directions did it spread? How was its development affected by the presence of magic (assuming there's magic in your world)? The presence of non-human races, if any? The actions or direct interventions of the gods?

6) How many languages are there? Which ones are related (e.g., the Romance languages) and why? Which languages borrow words or phrases from other languages? Which is likely to be most widely spoken?

7) How do most people make a living here?

8) Does the weather or climate contribute any habits or customs, such as the mid-afternoon siesta in hot countries?

9) What customs surround a birth and the introduction of a new child to the family? Is the mother sequestered for some period? Is the child? Is there a formal presentation of the new child to parents, grandparents, overlord, priest? Is a feast and celebration declared, or does everyone keep a low profile to keep from attracting demons or bad luck?

10) What dishes are considered holiday food? What foods/drinks are associated with particular holidays, events (e.g., funerals, weddings) or times of the year?

And of course, the BQs:

BQ1: What is your character's status in their society?
BQ2: Is this reflected in their appearance?
BQ3: I've been gone a long, long time. h*********u doing??

I don't world build very well at all so I had to keep it simple. I aligned the planet Meridian (which is the middle) with the Milky way Galaxy. On Meridia they can travel between planets.
1) There is the Eca Sen mountains which are bordering the beautiful woodlands. To one side the mountain peaks freeze quickly while at the base is greenery and the Aquati people who live under the water. The water is also orange (don't have a ecological reason just thought it was a pretty idea). The Aquati have an entire system in which to live under the water.
There are also farmers who live on the land near there and people who exists in the woods.
There is a technologically advanced society as well that dwell within the city walls. So it is like having the Amish a few miles away from Nasa.

2) I have several imaginary animals but must resemble earths animals just with different names and perhaps hides and purpose. There are also interplanetary species and with them come other types of animals such as a White Phoenix and a Lienator. These and other particular animals are controlled by a Princess of a planet. Some species of animals on each planet have powers that can be used or trained but in most cases the animals use them as a form of defense. The Lienator wants to procreate and once it does it will then begin spawning on more and more planets and eventually have a problem with containment.

3) So far the planets in my Galaxies are still producing natural resources. Meridia figured out that having races that were more intuned with the planet meant they could fortify the earth meant unifying technological advances somewhere else which is why everything is so separated. No one violates the earth. And people will switch areas in which to work so that overcrowding and human resources are shared equally.

4) There are historians that teach certain people specifics of their race like seminary school. The others are aware of it but unless they are curious they simply have a basic passing knowledge. Most can easily be educated as they move around the planet. Other chose to stay put.

5) The universe has energy that helps keep it in balance. That energy can actually come together and create a being. That being is protected by one who has studied the history. That energy as a person has one mission once it is completed the energy returns to the universe. If they fail then the energy is reassembled to keep trying. The extreme can be things like meteors, supernovas, earthquakes, destruction of planets, hurricanes, etc... If the universe is that p****d then things need to change.

6) Each planet has plenty of languages but Meridian is sort of the universal language for business, again being in the middle it is the best way to deal with everything, but most people are trained to recognize and speak some of the interplanetary languages.

7) Farming is a big trade and even the technological city benefits.

8) Everyone is expected to live in the Tech City and help out with the military. It keeps the planet safe. Even the women. Weather is not a factor.

My character Ronan is the protector of the Universal being Lyra.
No looking at him you can't tell. He resembles a warrior and none of the protectors know when they are going to be called. He is actually working with Lyra who used to be energy he had previously dealt with.
Fine.

Sweet! Finally, a question I would LOVE to answer!

1) The Dechora mountain range surrounds Santeria the city in which most of the story takes place. Beyond the large stretch of land are two bodies of ocean that isolate the Vale continent from the rest of the land. Below it lies the Palm Canyon, a long strip of desert that rests on the lower Southwest side of North Vale. It's basically a sub tropical country that was once rich of wild fruits and animals until well....humans came along.

2)Most of the animals have their own seperate habitat. The rest just evolve according to the climate of the land. Splaigors are large worm-like creatures that live deep below Vale and sometimes migrate North during the summer. White Volus are the substitute for tigers and are locals to Minerva, a country that faces freezing temperatures all year round they also have a high tolerance to sub-zero temperatures. The Shadow Serpents are legendary creatures spoken of in mythology, believed to live deep below the planet's crust. Splaigors eat animals smaller than them and can consume 190 lbs. of food a day. White Volus are omnivores and can just about anything edible. Shadow Serpents eat plants, bacteria and are rumored to eat people. Mimicro are small clam-like creatures that are often found in caves. They have the ability to shape shift into other animals and use this ability evade predators as well as capture prey. In their normal form they use the tentacles in their mouths to grab hold of their prey and chomp away with their razor sharp teeth. The rest I don't have room to list but I have at least 25,000 different species in my world.

3) Ivera Lombus are magical crystals that were once a popular thing to see back in the early 1600's. They have disappeared at the turn of the century, never to be seen again.

4) The history goes as far as the stone age but a good amount of it is not well known to the people. The Dark Ages is as far back as anyone can remember.

5)In the Dark Ages before Santeria was founded; there was a popular imperial city that plagued the valleys of North Vale named Duran City. It was in those years that the Ivera Lombus was the most common. People abused the strong magical power of these crystals and used them to arm their armies. Then it was stripped off them when the god Nivalis discovered how humans were using the Lombus. He destroyed all the crystals and cursed humankind with the mark of the Ivera. Now every human is born with the ability to use magic like the crystals but bare the side effects of almost dying after any spell and require an elemental source to absorb.

6)There is an ancient language people once used but it's mainly replaced with english. Very few know the dialect.

7)Work! And that type of work is the same as the work you find in this world. The current time period is 2005.

8)The climate in the planet is very consistent since the world isn't tilted. Seasons don't bare change to the lands but are still used to keep track of time.

9)There are no special customs that are still practiced in the world. Religion is almost dead.

10)No special holiday dishes exist but every region has unique dishes. Beer in particular is made of more natural resources and has a sweeter taste but still has the same side effects. In funerals, the spell called Life Pulse is casted in the resting place to allow plants and flowers to grow rapidly on the soft Earth purifying the resting place.

BQ1: My character is just an honest Joe pulled out of his urban life to face his destiny. Is a Retired Police officer.
BQ2: It is not reflected his appearance.
BQ3: I'm still hanging around here from time to time.

In my RPG version every animal can use magic on people but they can't in the book. This is also an RPG story arch piece, I already have it Copyrighted so don't go stealin' nothin'! :P But I hope this helps you in some way. I got help to make it by following the guidelines left by a well-reknown RPG writer who posted a FAQ on the web a while ago. I'd be happy to help ya if you wanted.

*gasp* PRESENTS PRESENTS PRESENTS!!! :D

1) Where are major mountain ranges? Rivers and lakes? Deserts? Forests, tropical and otherwise? Grasslands and plains?
---Synchra is rather flat. There were a good amount of forests until about a decade ago there. There's a long river that's been built over so that it isn't seen. The region of Burlix has a little of everything. The ground is fairly rocky/hilly in some places. There's a lot of untouched forests and rivers.

---There are dog spirits, and that's about it. They accompany a human spirit because she enjoys them and she's kind to them. They don't need to eat, but they must live only with the human spirit. Unless the dogs are humanized. Which one is in the story. Humanized, he cannot talk. He's very good with hot weather and rocky terrain.

3) Which natural resources, if any, have been depleted in which areas over time?
---Well, Synchra has sort of destroyed most of their forests. Bad Synchra.

4) How far back are there records or tales of historical events? How widely known are these stories?
---When the story starts, it's 7794. Historical events begin year 0, how the world began, what changed it, and where magic came from. Though I think I'm leaving that out of the novel. The human spirit is real, but her story dates back to the 4000's era or around there.

5) Where did civilization begin? What directions did it spread? How was its development affected by the presence of magic (assuming there's magic in your world)? The presence of non-human races, if any? The actions or direct interventions of the gods?
----Civilization doesn't actually begin until about the 1000's era. Though there are four regions of the world in total, the story focuses on two. At the other two regions, the world's creator and a creation meant to be like the creator live secluded from Synchra and Burlix. After the creation displeased the creator, it created the human race.

6) How many languages are there? Which ones are related (e.g., the Romance languages) and why? Which languages borrow words or phrases from other languages? Which is likely to be most widely spoken?
---There are ultimately two. The one the creator speaks, and the one humans speak. No humans know of the first.

7) How do most people make a living here?
---In Synchra, you're assigned a job. If you don't like it, you can be reassigned one. It's usually local jobs - my MC works as a bakery assistant. At Burlix, you're on your own.

8) Does the weather or climate contribute any habits or customs, such as the mid-afternoon siesta in hot countries?
---They associate rain with something bad. So there are rain shelters all across Synchra to protect people. Burlix doesn't use rain shelters because they deal with the rain's effects differently.

---In Synchra, a new citizen file is started for the baby. There are not really any other customs, but they do celebrate the birth of a child. At Burlix, sometimes babies are hidden because the parents may not be actual registered citizens of Burlix.

10) What dishes are considered holiday food? What foods/drinks are associated with particular holidays, events (e.g., funerals, weddings) or times of the year?
---They don't have brand food. It's all stuff we eat though. Potatoes, carrots, cookies, bread, meat, etc.

BQ1: What is your character's status in their society?
---Isaac is between middle class and lower class.

BQ2: Is this reflected in their appearance?
---Well, his clothes are okay. He can take a shower everyday. Poor is more so determined by what house you can afford (in Synchra and Burlix I mean).

BQ3: I've been gone a long, long time. h*********u doing??
---I'm doing okay. You? :)

1) Where are major mountain ranges?
In the country of Idaria, there are the Idon Mountains, which are considered to be one of the most incredible places in the world I created. Each one has a different climate.

2) If there are imaginary animals, how do they fit into the ecology?
There aren't any mythical creatures in the world, but there are secretly mutated animal/humans that have been created by the antagonist of my story. They aren’t natural, and do not fit in with the world, and have not been released into it. The successful products out of many experiments that are actually noted in the novels are combination of human and animal. They’re called Zivers collectively. Two of the main protagonists are these creatures. They’re successful attempts, but a large lot aren't, including the MC’s best friend. One mutated with a panther, and another with a gecko. They are equipped with the ability to turn into mix of their creature, or stay in a human mode, although some attributes of creatures remain. They take on strengths and weaknesses of these creatures. They can still eat human food, but all have a strong craving for the food their animal would eat. Some embrace that, but some despise it. But imprisoned, that is all they’re given. They’re just as intelligent as their human selves, and most are enhanced if their body can take the change properly.

3) Which natural resources, if any, have been depleted in which areas over time?
None have, actually. Even if there isn’t something in one country, it exists somewhere.

4) How far back are there records or tales of historical events? How widely known are these stories?
The deep history is not particularly mentioned in my novel, with the main historical moment only ending a few years before the start of my novel: The Brother’s Quarrel.

This was basically a war between the two neighbouring countries Fillanda and Steyorda and ends three years before the start of my novel, but is a very important part to the story.

Once, the two countries worked together and had formed a strong alliance with each other. While a meeting between the Rejics (leaders) was occurring in capital city of Fillanda, a Steyordian soldier accidently shot and killed an old widow. This caused a major upset and Fillanda desired a sacrifice. A life for a life. But Steyorda refused to oblige, claiming that their soldier had acted out in retaliation of what he thought, had been an attempted assassination. Offering to compensate for this death did not suffice. Each person in the Fillanda was as important as another to the Rejic. He demanded a life and refused anything less. All Fillandians stood by this judgement, not wavering at any price Steyorda would offer. There’s more to it, but Y!A won’t let me put everything down. Or at least, that's the skin deep story.

5) Where did civilization begin?
It’s not a mythical world. There are no deities, magic or natural non-human races.

6) How many languages are there?
Over 98?f the world speaks Redelan, the language originated from Redel. The majority of countries speak Redelan and Redelan alone, and only a few countries outside the main Amestron belt have their own separate language. Redel is so powerful, and its influences extend to the vast majority of the world. So the language is the same essentially.
Source(s):
7) How do most people make a living here? There’s an incredibly wide range of jobs available in my world. You can start work from ten years and above, though what you can do does matter about your age to some extent. Iris, an important character in my novel is sixteen years old, but works in one of the most important Laboratories in the world. There are other jobs too, not much different to what you’d expect on earth. Anything from Teachers, chefs and businessmen to underground workers and those in black market type places. I can't post the rest of the answers, I wrote too much.

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!
