Can i become qualified as a welder without doing an apprenticeship ? ?

Im currently a TIG Welder (semi-skilled) and only have a years experience. I want to better my career within the next few years but without doing a 4 year apprenticeship for rubbish money. Most places ask for qualifications but im not sure what type they want. I have looked at night courses but in welding bit i dont know if it will be enough to do things such as onshore/offshore work etc. Can anyone help ?
