Do you need to follow a program to homeschool your kids?

I am a credentialed teacher with several years of experience, and I am thinking about quitting my job and homeschooling my kids. Several homeschooling families I know follow a program like K12 or video school or something like that. Do I have to do that or can I just make up my own curriculum and homeschool that way? I know what I'm doing and I would not mess up my kids' education.
