Why do repair shops fix items with incorrect parts instead of telling the customer?

I have had two different household appliances repaired in the last year and they never worked properly afterward. When I call the repair shops to complain, I am told that since my items are so old, the parts are no longer available and they fixed them with the closest parts to the original they could find. I really think that if the proper parts aren't available any longer, the customer should be told and then decide with that information whether to go ahead with a repair.
