does it help to shade a central air unit?

Have central air in indiana, but doesnt keep up with the temps, especially later in the day, unit is in direct sunlight as it is located on west side of the house, would it help to shade the unit loosely? or does that have any effect on it. My air conditioner repair man said unit is working, but harder keeping up in these crappy temps, lol. Thanks for any help. Mare
