What is the authority of a FBI special agent?

Are they able to investigate any crime they have authority over, or do they have to ask permission from a superior first. I have read that they move people around to other field offices in other cities often, can someone stay at one field office there entire career? Any anwsers?

They are assigned cases by their supervisor and usually work as part of a team. Typically, a new agent will be in their first assignment for 2-3 years and then get transferred. That assignment can last for years unless the agent applies for a special assignment or receives a promotion.

About 90% of the positions in the FBI are called 'special agent'. The FBI has NO authority over MOST crimes, unless INVITED by local police. They ONLY have authority to investigate violations of FEDERAL law. The VAST majority of crimes are covered under STATE law.
