Would the British army have more quality recruits if they had higher standards?

You don't need any qualifications to join many jobs and people with convictions for violence such as assault and even GBH are allowed in. Why is this? Is it any wonder it's an attractive career option for chavs and chavettes? The RAF is much more selective and as a result half the people in it aren't halfwits. Rescue, the policy is "no more than two unspent convictions". I know a guy with an assault conviction who joined with no problem. So shh.

I thought you guys had the most professional army in the world? And you let criminals in? We don't even do that in the US. Surely you're mistaken. In the US so much as a traffic ticket can prevent you from joining.

Does it matter if they're violent? If you can pass the course, then you've clearly changed. The army has it's own standards of behaviour and what is expected, and i'd assume that basic training would weed out the once who couldn't behave themselves... More
