How can my boyfriend get permanent residency in the US from Ireland?

My boyfriend wants to get a job here after he is done with his course in college for IT. How would he go about getting a visa and/or a green card for permanent residency? We are both slightly confused about the process. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! He is going to school in Ireland and finishing there too.
