What were some common jobs in America in the 1880s?

I'm working on a short story and would just like to know of some possible occupations for a character :)

People also worked on railroads and in railroad stations. There were a lot more longshoremen and ships crewman on merchant ships. There were a lot more miners (no open pit mines) and loggers (no chainsaws). Everything was less mechanized and just less efficient and more labor intensive. Most women were homemakers... More

mostly farming. if you didn't farm, you didn't eat. (that includes hunting and fishing). most families were self sufficient. watch Little House on th Praire

Farming would have been the most common job. Today only a small amount of people are farmers and this is because of all our advancements in the Agricultural field. But in the 1880's the technology wasn't as advanced so they needed more people. Factory jobs would probably be the second most common.

A lot of people were farmers in the 1880s in America. A lot of people also worked in factories. Some people taught school at one room school houses. Some people worked at saloons and some people had their own store.
