Why aren't billionaires offering to pay some of the national debt?
like steve jobs' widow laurene powell who has 7 billion dollars. i doubt she has the time to spend all of it. plus it benefits america to be number 1 and not number 2.

Because you don't make money by giving it away, sadly. These people worked for what they earn so why should they give it back to the economy just because someone messed up spending? Just because people are rich it doesn't mean they can fix all the problems in the world. Or that they should.

Why is it their responsibility when govt cant control themselves? And if they did pay it off, what will prevent govt from continuing as if nothing happened? The problem is govt spending.

Maybe she doesn't think paying useless government bureaucrats more than she is legally obliged is a good use of her money. I don't blame her a bit. That's the LAST place I'd spend extra dough. The absolute LAST.

Honestly, I believe it is because the rich want to stay rich. Also, the economy is very unstable, and the amount that billionaires would donate would just start to make a difference in the national debt. There is simply too much of it.

It would take million/billionaires all over the country to chip in even if 25% of their yearly income it would take years for it to start making dents in the national debt. On top of that thanks to tax loopholes, havens and avoids it would take even longer.

Because they're selfish and think it's all theirs. Not all of them actually earned it. Some of them inherited it. There is a difference. With the budget plan we currently have, as soon as the debt is payed off we'll be racking up the debt just like we have been doing. When your spending is larger than your income, you will always have a debt.
