There are a lot of reasons to join the military
The idea of honor and glory in war is the wrong reason.
First realize that over 90?f the people who serve in the military never have a shot fired at them.
Then understand that the military of today is a very technical place, where knowledge is as or more important than shooting a rifle.
An example
The most powerful weapons system on the planet today is a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. 100,000 tons of ammo, jet fuel, 90 aircraft, helicopters, 2 nuclear reactors, 4 catapults and 6000 men.
Now realize that 5,900 of those men work every day, at a huge range of jobs, from fry cook to machinist, from compartment cleaner to nuclear reactor operator, from fueling team (the grapes) to catapult crew (the greens), all to allow 100 aviators to borrow the planes for a few hours so they can have a ball tearing up the sky. After which they come on back, sign off on the gripe sheet, and go to their lounge (the ready room) for some fresh coffee and a game of acey-ducey before the evening meal and the movie.
It's no surprise naval aviators are a bit arrogant. (OK - A lot) To have 5000 people working their tails off so you can have fun in the worlds most expensive sport cars is a real rush.
But they are the warriors. And that's the way it is.
The other 5900 will never hear a shot in anger. But they work their tails off and do their jobs as best they can, so that those pilots can do their thing if the call comes.

And even if you do become one of those at the sharp end of the stick. You need to remember your job what your job is:
The actor George C Scott playing George Patton said it very well
"I want you to remember that no *astard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb *astard die for his country"

Join the military to learn and to grow. To join with dreams of glory in your head means you will be sadly disappointed

It doesn't matter what they think unless the ones against you joining are your parents.

You do have a choice.
There are many ways you can serve your country. The military is just one way.
Your desire to be a warrior should be evaluated carefully.
Ask a wonded warrior about his/her experience.
Thousands of men and women were killed in Iraq and are being killed in Afghanistan.
These wars DO NOT MAKE our country safer. Terrorists can strike in unconventional ways and with deadly consequences. Do not think you will make your country safer because of your military job.
People are advising you to serve your country in other ways. Get an education, learn a trade, get a job. War is NOT the answer.

They love and value you. They don't want to think of the possibility of you being in harms way. The thought of losing you or living without you. They don't want you harmed. They are tryng to be protective. I'm sure none of them said it wasn't that you would be honoring your country. They are thinking about you, instead.

I can't just start watching the news because I'm ignorant of current events. Any "news for dummies" or sites like that? Also, any sites/newspapers I should avoid because of propaganda? I'm Irish.

I don't have time to watch TV in the morning, don't have a long commute to listen to the radio for too long. What other ways are there to stay current with events that don't require too much time and effort? I'm clueless all the time and I'm starting to work a job dealing with clients. Also what if you don't follow sports, don't want to spend all day watching it. Any good tips on keeping the conversation going with someone (stranger/client) to make it look like you aren't completely clueless?

I'm in high school and I really don't know much about what's going on in the world or much about politics at all. I feel stupid sometimes when we have group discussions about government or current events in history class at school. Is there a website, program, tv show, or something to help me become more knowledgeable about these sorts of things?
